Auto insurance is something you have to have in many states. With auto insurance rates continuing to rise, you can always use a few tips to lower your personal costs. The following tips can help you prick the amount of your auto insurance rates. In addition to the items listed below, it is always a good idea to ask your agent about any additional items that can reduce your rates. Don’t demand them to tell you if you don’t ask.

The first thing that can reduce your auto insurance rates is the type of car you have. Before you purchase a unusual or old-fashioned vehicle you should check with your insurance agent. Rates will differ depending on whether the car is current or frail, two door or four door, and what type of features the vehicle has.

If you already have a vehicle, there are still some improvements that can lower your auto insurance. Security and safety are what you are trying to achieve. Installing a security system will, in most cases, chop the amount you pay for auto insurance. In some cases, having anti-lock brakes can also lower your auto insurance. Some states even require insurance companies to give discounts for anti-lock brakes.

In addition to the type of car you drive, the way you drive your car will effect your auto insurance rates. You can lower your insurance rates by driving safely and staying out of trouble. Even if your driving record isn’t perfect apt now, if you stay out of trouble long enough it will lower your auto insurance.

Another way to lower your auto insurance is to take a estimable driving course. Ask your insurance agent about the requirements for this type of discount before you sign up for a class. They may even be able to direct you to the proper course. Drivers Ed can also lower your auto insurance depending on your age and when you completed the course. If you qualify for this discount you may also want to inquire about discounts for good grades.

Finally, you can lower your insurance by raising your deductible. Most states have a certain deductible that you can’t go over. However, if you did not discuss your deductible when you went to get insurance, than you may have a lower deductible than you need. Just remember that your deductible will be the amount you have to pay if you out of your fill pocket.

Since 1977 insurance has been a vast part of my life. Especially since it is costing me an arm and a leg to preserve buying it. For years the insurance industry has been telling us how they save us money. Yet it seems that every time things were going well along came a rate hike. They said it was because costs were going up. Well what has happened to all the money I have paid into the system.

My insurance carriers have paid one claim to my family. That was $550 paid to a body shop after a deer ran in front of my car during the wee hours of the morning. I paid more in premiums that year than was paid out in the claim. As a whole we have had only 2 speeding tickets and 1 crash in a combined 68 years of driving experience between my wife and I. I do not count my children but they have not had any tickets or accidents either.

So why do I maintain getting rate hikes when all the advertising tells me that they can save me $500 over my recent carrier.

Today I spent all day getting quotes from insurance carriers. My current carrier is Allstate. For our cars we currently pay $103.76 per month. That is over $1200 per year. We do not have unique cars and the cars we have are both paid for completely so we carry the required insurance by law with additional liability coverage just in case. I spent a lot of time today getting quotes. About 45 minutes to fill out all the online forms and 4 hours fending off phone calls which started less than an hour after completing my first online accomplish.

I was really surprised at how fast the response was actually. And of course the first question from everyone was when do you want your new insurance to go into conclude. The one thing that bothered me is that my current company even called me and offered me a quote.

Now you shouldn’t be surprised at the results. In fact no company wanted to actually give me a quote that I could hold them to. Every quote that I received had a disclaimer on it. All of the disclaimers basically said the same thing. They said that this quote is not binding until the policy is actually issued and may go up after we have completed your checks. What checks I gave them all the information that was requested what are they going to do now? Well the biggest thing it seems is your credit rating. Poor credit results in higher premiums even if you have a sparkling driving record. (Our credit is just average I guess at approximately 688) One representative actually told me if my credit was over 700 they would discount the policy after the first 6 months. All but one would not let us pay except by automatic draft from our checking account. I asked about bundling our house insurance for additional discounts and two of the agents said they couldn’t do it but would make a label and a local agent would contact us for that.

I was really kind of disappointed in the level of care that I got. Especially after all the money they are spending on commercials to get me to call. The agents I spoke with were not really agents at all but were “customer representatives” and any questions out of the ordinary would have to be relayed to a licensed agent. So for all the big talk about trust and good hands and saving money it all comes down to a really big company spending an bad lot of money on advertising and very shrimp money on actually delivering a quality product at a decent price.

All said and done. I will stay where I am for the time being. No single company could save me more than $100 on my yearly cost and no single company was willing to provide me reasons why they were not saving me the promised $500.

When you need insurance. Pull out your local phone book. Call all your friends and family and find someone that has a good reputation for service. Don’t view to the lizard in a suit that steals money from the boss’s desk. Inspect to a quality reputation.

Health care insurance has dominated the news for the past couple of years now with the debate of whether to make it mandatory to have and whether the government should offer their own. It’s interesting to see individual States attempt to prevent this law from entering their region while the majority of these States actually have laws requiring auto insurance. While people are upset over too worthy federal government regulation, they seem to be oblivious of the fact that auto insurance tends to be one of the most regulated. The appealing part is that this regulation comes from the individual States and not the federal government itself. As auto insurance is regulated by the States, the laws and types of coverage required vary from state to state. California is a state where auto insurance is one of the most heavily regulated.

This is actually a positive since its regulations are very consumer friendly. Having worked in personal auto insurance for the past ten years ranging in positions from customer service rep and underwriter with a top 3 U.S. insurance company, to underwriting manager of a start up insurance company, I have come to the conclusion that while most Californians know they must carry auto insurance, they don’t quite understand all the coverage and what affects their rate. While some of the initial information may already be wildly available on the internet, I don’t feel I have read anything that fully explains the regulations and goes on to advise on how to save money. The following will helpfully aid consumers understand what determines their rates and how to save money when purchasing auto insurance in the State of California.

First and foremost, California auto insurance rates are dependent upon whether you are considered a California good driver. Proposition 103 defines the qualifications for this discount clearly. It is not subject to individual insurance company’s guidelines. All other rating factors are secondary to this one discount. I am attempting to make this as basic as possible without lifeless you all with all the regulations involved, so all I will say is that proposition 103 is the major insurance regulatory law in the State of California. If you meet Prop 103′s definition of a California Good Driver, you are automatically entitled to a 20% discount from an insurance company’s regular rate. Again I must stress that this isn’t an optional discount for an insurance company to give- it is required by law for them to provide. How does a driver qualify for this discount? There are 3 stipulations;

1) The driver must have a minimum of 3 yrs continuous license experience. California unlike other states, does not use a driver’s age, rather how long the driver has actually been licensed to drive. The popular theory that a driver’s rate will drop at age 25 is not necessarily lawful in California. It is possible for a 19 yr old to have a better rate than a 25 yr old. For instance, if a 25 yr old driver recently moved from modern york city where he had no utilize for a license and just obtained one when he got to California, he would be considered having less driving experience than a 19 yr feeble driver who has had a license since age 16 and therefore be subject to a higher rate based on this rating factor alone. Continuous means that the driver has had no lapse in licensing whatsoever- meaning the driver has not had their license suspended, revoked, canceled, or expired during the last three years. Active Military personnel and their dependents are exempt only from the expired portion of this requirement. License experience is based on being licensed in the U.S. or Canada. If the driver has been licensed elsewhere in the world they ma still qualify for the discount if they meet all the definitions and have been licensed in the U.S. or Canada for the last 18 months.

2) The driver may not have more than 1 California DMV point on their driving record within the last three years. The California Department of Motor Vehicles classifies personal auto traffic violations into 0, 1, or 2 points. An example of a 0 point violation would be driving on expired tags, a 1 point violation would be a regular traffic stop such as running a red light, a minor speed (not driving in excess of 100 MPH), or making an illegal turn. 2 point violations are all the major ones- DUI’s, Hit and Runs, Reckless driving, etc… The California DMV will categorize all out of State traffic convictions as either a 0, 1, or 2 point violation. The driver has to be convicted of the traffic violation before an insurance company can charge for it and count it against the California Worthy Driver discount. That is the law. Failure to appear violations, and violations that the driver has not been convicted may not be extinct. As for accidents, they can only be used if the driver was 51% or more at fault and if the total damage was $750 dollars or more. An accident that was at fault where no one was hurt- better yet where an auto insurance company did not payout for injuries- only counts as 1 DMV point. An accident that has injuries counts as 2 DMV points. Please brand that insurance companies normally have their own point system that has nothing to do with the California DMV and whether a driver qualifies for the CA good driver discount. Also please note that an insurance company can charge for 0 DMV point violations even though they don’t count against the driver’s California Good Driver discount eligibility. The driver can have 1 CA DMV point traffic violation or 1 At fault traffic accident resulting in injure of $750 or more and still qualify for the discount. The driver may lose an insurance company’s independent good driver discount, such as a 5 yr good driver discount, as a result of having an at fault accident or traffic violation, therefore seeing an increase in their rate at the renewal, but the insurance company may not remove the California Good Driver discount.

3) The driver may not have a DUI conviction within the last Ten years. California means business when it comes to DUI convictions. If you have been convicted of a DUI you will not be eligible for the California Good driver discount and all the protections it affords (which I will discuss later). It is highly recommended that if the driver has a shot at having his/her DUI violation reduced to a reckless driving conviction, that they pursue it emphatically. How will this help the driver? Even if the driver has to do all the DUI related community service and all the DUI courses, the ten year stipulation does not apply to a reckless (and wet reckless) driving conviction. So instead of not qualifying for the CA good driver discount for ten years, the driver will only lose it for 3 years (depending on when the driver has his license reinstated and has been licensed again for 3 continuous years and if after those 3 years they meet the qualifications). To have the DUI conviction reduced will most likely result in the hiring of a lawyer but the cost of the attorney fees will pale in comparison to not having the CA good driver discount for the full ten years.

By law, an insurance company MUST offer a driver who qualifies for the California Good Driver Discount a policy at a rate of 20% less than their regular rates. Regardless of any other factor including vehicles, whether the driver requires an Certificate of Financial Responsibility filing (SR22), etc…

After determining whether a driver is a California Good Driver, insurance companies must make the following 3 rating factors the major ones in coming up with a rate;

1) The driver’s driving (license) experience

2) The driver’s driving record

3) The total number of miles a driver drives in a year

All other factors including where the driver lives, the driver’s sex, marital status, occupation, the type of vehicle (although not the color) you have, etc… are considered secondary and may not be weighed more heavily than the first three. Also to clarify, an insurance company may still use where the driver lives as a rating factor but it has to be a minor one. The law that was passed and was to be implemented by August 2008, specifies that zip codes can not be used as a primary rate factor only. Please note that while it may seem that an insurance company is calm using zip codes as a major rate factor, the rate increase could have resulted in the update of the driver’s annual mileage. Suppose a driver previously lived in an apartment conclude to work and previously stated to an insurance company they only drove 6,000 miles a year. The driver then advises the insurance company they have moved to a house in a suburb farther away from work. an insurance company will then normally want updated annual mileage for the driver. If the driver then calculates he drives 12,000 miles a year now with the move, the majority of the increase in the premium is a result of the new annual mileage, not because of the driver’s recent zip code (of course this is depending on whether the insurance company is fully complying with the law- we’ll discuss how insurance companies attempt to circumvent this later).

California allows for insurance companies to use occupation as a rating factor and lets insurance companies provide discounts as a result. There are normally two tiers of discounts available and its important to remember not all companies offer an occupation discount. the tiers are usually broken up as such;

Tier I- this includes bankers, Civil/Electrical engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, White collar Managers, Directors, Teachers, Professors, etc.

Tier II- Supervisors (retail or otherwise), nurses, software engineers, underwriters, paralegals, call center service representatives etc..

The remaining occupations- such as bartenders, construction workers, police and firemen, celebrities, bank tellers, secretaries, retail/fast food workers, etc… usually are not entitled to an occupation discount.

Again, its up to the insurance company if it wants to offer this type of discount and what occupations will qualify for it, this is just a general list.

Females still receive lower rates than males, and married individuals (including same sex registered domestic partners) receive lower rates than single ones.

Vehicles may alter a rate depending on the coverage a driver chooses to carry and coverage will be discussed in fragment II.

Also discussed in part II will be the strict regulations an insurance company must adhere too when attempting to cancel or non renewal a policy holder.

Part III will provide tips on how to place money when shopping for auto insurance in California.

Are you looking for a bargain on your auto insurance? There are bargains to be had, but finding
them can seem like running through a maze. Thanks to state re-insurance regulations, there are
no abominable insurance companies. All auto insurance companies will pay claims. All auto insurance
companies offer the same basic coverage.

Forget about brand loyalty. You are purchasing a highly regulated service, so it makes sense to
find the best possible price.

There are three main factors that directly affect your auto insurance rate:

1. Your driving record. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance, but
no one told insurance actuaries. Actuaries make their living by applying the law of titanic
numbers to individual incidents. If you've been involved in a number of accidents, or have a
number of traffic tickets, ask to pay higher premiums.

2. Your geographical location. People in urban areas pay more for their auto insurance than
people in rural areas. In general, the more densely populated the area in which you live, the
higher your rates will be.

3. Your age and gender. Single men pay higher rates than single women on the whole. Younger
drivers pay higher premiums than older drivers until they reach a positive cut-off age. Married
people usually pay lower rates than single people.

Insurance companies weigh these factors differently. The company that has the best rates for a
35 year old married man may have the worst rates for a 50 year broken-down single woman. If you have two
accidents on your record, you will be surprised at the different rates you will get from
different companies. It pays to shop.

The first step in saving money on your auto insurance is to resolve how much coverage you need.
If you are a person of notable means, you need to protect yourself with higher coverages. If
you're honest starting out and rent your home or apartment, you can probably get by with the state
minimum coverage. The more coverage you have, the higher your rate.

Here are the areas of coverage on auto insurance policies.

Collision: If you are financing your automobile, most banks or finance companies will make it
compulsory to have collision coverage. If you bear your vehicle outright, ask yourself if you
could afford to replace it if it was a total loss.

Comprehensive: Covers theft and acts of God. If you hit a deer, or a tree falls on your car (it
happens), or your vehicle is swept away to Kansas by a tornado, the comprehensive fraction of your
policy will cover the incurred loss.

Liability: Covers wound to other people and their property. Liability is usually broken down
per incident with a cap on the total amount paid. 100/300 liability coverage will screen $100,000
per incident with a maximum payout of $300,000.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist: This coverage will pay you if you are involved in an
accident with, yes, an uninsured or underinsured motorist.

Medical Coverage: Pays medical expenses regardless of fault.

Personal Injury Protection: Some states require this coverage. It pays your medical expenses
resulting from an accident whether or not you are at fault.

Auto Rental Reimbursement: This option pays for a rental car while your auto is being repaired.

Next, decide your deductible. Deductible is a two-dollar term for how much of the insurance
risk you are willing to win. If you have a $500 deductible, you will pay the first $500 of
each claim out of pocket. The higher your deductible, the lower your rate.

Armed with this information, you're ready to go shopping for auto insurance. Create sure you get
quotes on exactly the same coverage from each insurance company. Unscrupulous agents (yes, there
are some) can and will manipulate coverages to sell you on a lower rate.

Most auto insurance companies offer a discount if you will buy homeowner's or renter's insurance
from them. If a company can offer you better rates on both homeowner's and auto insurance, don't
be afraid to switch. Often, switching your homeowner's insurance is as simple as filling out a
form to allow the new company to bill your mortgage escrow account. Make sure you are getting the
same or better coverage for your dollar.

Some companies offer lower rates determined by occupation and or education level. Most companies
offer multi-car discounts. Be careful of advertised discounts. Often a competing company's rates
will be lower without them.

Luckily, there are online services that allow you to compare rates on auto insurance by simply
filling out a form and clicking your mouse. The days of driving from company to company, or
making a series of telephone calls to find the best auto insurance rates are over.

When looking to win automobile insurance in Idaho there are a few laws and considerations that one needs to take before the decision is made.

Insurance Companies Located in Idaho

Idaho is fortunate that it is served by a wide variety of automobile insurance companies ranging in from State Farm Insurance, to Farmers, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Titan Auto, and the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. All insurance companies in Idaho are monitored by the Idaho Department of Insurance which is located in the spot capital of Boise and all insurance complaints, questions and concerns should be directed through them.

State Requirements for Insurance in Idaho

Like most states, Idaho requires that all drivers, including motorcycles, on the road must have, at the minimum, liability insurance. This liability insurance must at least include $25,000.00 for injury or death of one person, $50,000.00 for injury or death for two or more people, and $15,000.00 for property harm, though most insurance companies will suggest to its motorists that the amounts insured should be higher.

Proof of this automobile insurance must be kept in the auto at all times and if you are found to be driving without it, you will be required to provide proof for one year if you are a first time offender. If a driver is found to be driving without insurance, their license can be suspended and a fine imposed by the judicial system.

The state of Idaho does not require Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist coverage. Though, since January of 2009, Idaho has required that all insurance companies to include an uninsured motorist bodily injury provision unless the clients expresses, in writing, that they do not want such coverage.

Average Insurance Rates for Idaho

Based on figures, from the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost of automobile insurance for the Idaho driver was $564.00 for the year of 2007. This amount makes it roughly $230.00 less expensive than the national U.S. average at $794.00 for that same year to ensure your automobile.

This amount is only an average of insurance rates and the loyal amount will depend upon the driver and their personal information, as well as the automobile itself. When applying for auto insurance, the insurance company may ask, and determine your rates, upon your age, past driving narrate, your education and profession as well as your marital space. Idaho also allows insurance companies to determine your rates, as well as products offered, based on your personal credit history.

Factors that are important, when an insurance company is determining rates, also include the actual automobile that is being insured. The year that auto was made as well as the make and model that it is, is also information they will need. The amount you paid for your auto and the current condition that it is in now. Your insurance company will also want to know what safety features, such as a driver’s air bag, that might be included in you automobile.

Relatively speaking, Idaho is an inexpensive dwelling to insure your automobile, but by keeping your driving record clean and your personal credit history in reliable shape you will go even further in lowering your insurance rates.

America was called the ‘land of milk and honey’ by the old world, yet neither cows nor honeybees are native to the Americas. Surprisingly, it is not the honey from the bees that is so critical to our economy. Pollination by bees adds over 15 billion dollars to our economy (Flores). Around 130 crops need honeybees in order to thrive (Kaplan). In the United States, honeybees produce about 200 million pounds of honey, worth 125 million dollars, and about 3.9 million pounds of beeswax, worth 7 million dollars (Doebler). Beekeeping is a serious business, not only for our economy, but for our food. Around one third of our food depends on pollination, including coffee, green chile, soybeans, apples, berries, squash, almonds, and many others (NRDC). In California alone, the almond slit requires the service of about half the United States bee colonies, around 1.2 million (Flores).

Unfortunately, the bee business isn’t going so well. A novel phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has been taking a sizable toll on our honey bees. During fall 2006, beekeepers in many countries around the world noticed a sudden disappearance of managed honey bee colonies, and for no apparent reason. These hives were formerly healthy, but for some reason bees simply abandoned their hives, often leaving just the queen and a few caretakers. In February 2007, the syndrome had been named (Kaplan). Congress recognized Colony Collapse Disorder as a threat in 2007 and granted emergency funds to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to search for honey bee disappearances. The 2008 Farm Bill granted the Department of Agriculture $20 million each year to support bee research and related work (NRDC). Research is underway to try to determine the causes of CCD, and how to prevent it from occurring. Possibilities involve combinations of pesticide exposure, invasive parasitic mites, inadequate food supply, transportation, and many different viruses. As the cause is believed to be from multiple sources, pinpointing them will be difficult. Many viruses are believed to be passed on by the mites, which in of themselves are devastating enough.

At an apiculture conference, a commercial beekeeper cries in front of the audience. In 6 months, he was broke, loosing his house, and his entire beekeeping operation had been wiped out. The cause of his disaster was two little parasites. One, the varroa mite, is described by James Tew, a specialist in beekeeping at Ohio Place University, as the “biggest catastrophe to befall apiculture since its establishment in this country in the 1600s… In only a few years, the varroa mite redesigned nearly 300 years of North American apiculture in ways akin to the dramatic way the boll weevil restructured the cotton-producing industry … in the early 1920s.” Varroa mites are large enough to be seen by the eye. Female varroa mites attach to bees between abdominal segments, feeding on a substance similar to our blood, called hemolmph. When females enter a nursery cell, called a brood cell, the mites lay eggs. The mite nymphs then feed on the developing bees. The mites and bees leave the brood cell together, as adults. The mites cause many birth defects, such as shortened abdomens, deformed wings and legs, or sometimes cause death. Colonies infested with varroa mites that are not treated can survive for about 8-18 months. Scott Camazine, an entomologist at Penn State University, believes that the mites aren’t the main problem. He says that the mites are simply making viral transmission faster (Doebler).

The other mite feeding on honeybees are tracheal mites. These mites are much smaller than varroa mites and believed to be less uncertain. These parasites live and feed in the bee’s trachea, clogging the airway and limiting respiration. The major effect of this is that bees cannot raise their metabolic rate to sustain warm while they fly. Beekeepers frequently position grease patties or menthol chips inside the hives when honey is not being produced to plain the spread of tracheal mites.

Many studies trying to choose the cause of CCD are built on a project started for the California almond crops. The study started as a arrangement to artificially supplement the honeybee’s diets in order to form larger colonies (Flores). As California is a major consumer of honeybee use for pollination, it is not surprising that the first effort to fight CCD have started there.

Entomologist Jeff Pettis, research leader of the ARS Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland, is working on several collaborations to try to determine the cause of CCD. One study is looking at the combination of pesticide use and Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV), found in a previous study with university researcher Jay D. Evans, to be strongly associated with CCD. The second experiment will look at the effects of varroa mites and pesticides combined. If these two studies fail, other combinations will be explored. One of the issues with these and other CCD studies is that samples have only been taken after CCD has been reported. Therefore, Pettis has begun his study with three different beekeepers one both healthy and affected hives. Hopefully, the samples will give information to previous signs and causes of CCD (Kaplan). John Adamczyk, the acting research leader for ARS’s Honey Bee Research Unit in Weslaco, Texas, explains the hope for the study: “At the end of the 5-year cycle we’ll have specific recommendations that the beekeeper could use on how to manage bees more efficiently during long-range transport for pollination. We want to be able to transfer that technology to be useful by the end user” (Flores).

A major issue is the huge outburst of IAPV. Some thought that importation of bees from Australia and China had brought the disease with them, but entomologists Yanping (Judy) Chen and Evans, both also with the ARS Bee Research Laboratory, found otherwise. Chen said that “Our explore shows that, without seek information from, IAPV has been in this country since at least 2002. This work makes it clear that IAPV is not a recent introduction from Australia” (Kaplan). This however, does not rule out IAPV as a cause of CCD.

American foulbrood a bacterial disease of the honey bee, which is very devastating to bee colonies. The most obvious symptom is a creamy or dark brown glue-like larval remain that can be pulled out in a rope. This test is known as the ‘matchstick test.’ It affects the brood cells, killing bees before they are productive, usually while pupae, and occasionally with larvae. Brood cells may be spotted, showing early signs (de Graaf). Introduction of American foulbrood, or any other foulbrood, can kill off all future generations of honey bees is not spotted and treated immediately. A new drug, tylosin tartrate (TYLAN Soluble), has been favorite for spend to treat foulbrood (Honey Bees). If treated, colonies can continue to thrive.

A very large study involving pesticides has been conducted. 158 pesticides were tested among the honey bee, the leaf cutting bee, and the alkali bee. The leaf cutting bee is a solitary nesting bee that mainly foraging on alfalfa plants. Nests are built in narrow tube-like cavities, and separate cells are made for each egg and lined with alfalfa. The cell is then plugged with alfalfa leaves, and a original nest is made in the area. The alkali bee is also a solitary, bee that builds nests in soil. This western bee likes alkaline soils near water. The nest is between five and twenty centimeters deep, with many oval cells branching off the main shaft. This bee pollinates mainly alfalfa, onion, clover, celery, and mints. A smaller pesticide watch has also been conducted on the bumble bee. Bumble bees are social insects, like honey bees. They gain smaller nests, consisting of only 100-500 individuals. They prefer to nest underground, like the alkali bee, and need undisturbed meadows, old barns or woodlots. Bumble bees work harder than honeybees at cooler temperatures. They pollinate a larger variety of plants, but do particularly well on tomatoes and berries. The results were very similar for all species, although certain bees do better than others with different pesticides (Devillers).

Many researchers have found a completely different solution to the problem of CCD, that is, to simply not have honey bee hives. Wild bees, also known as non-honey bees, have been shown to be better pollinators than the honeybee, although it is still unclear as to whether non-native honey bees are negatively effecting wild native bee populations. Studies are conflicting, and broad pollination results have occurred when used together, yet the large numbers of honeybees could have a large impact on native species if food supplies are exiguous (Paini). Entomologist James Cane has found that a new native bee, called the Osmia bee, or the Mason bee, is a wonderful pollinator of berries. Cane learned of the bee from bee enthusiast Ron yon der Hellen, who told Cane of the quarter-inch long metallic green bee that had housed itself in his wooden nesting boards that he keeps as housing for leaf cutting bees. Cane borrowed several hundred of these bees and found that they visited as many red raspberry flowers as did honey bees in the same amount of time,, and nearly as many blackberry flowers. While red raspberries and blackberries are self-pollinating, bee visits made berries better. Cane found that red raspberry flowers visited by honey bees or the Osmia bees bore berries that were 30% heavier. The Osmia bee however, always gathered pollen, while honeybees did not. Even better, these bees are resistant to the devastating mites. After 5 years of study, Cane plans to give these emerald-green bees to growers and beekeepers (Wood).

Another study shows that native bees are up to five times more efficient at pollinating sunflowers than honeybees alone. Researchers at the Berkeley and Davis campuses of the University of California found that wild bees play a crucial role in the pollinating process. Sarah Greenleaf, the study’s leader, says that, “Up until now, we have concept that honey bees alone were doing most of the pollination, but now we know that a lot of honey bee pollination happens because of their interaction with wild native bees. This means that wild bees are much, much more important that we previously thought.” She and Claire Kremen observed the behavior of honey bees and wild native bees in sunflower fields during two different growing seasons. They found that in fields where wild bees were rare, one honeybee visit produced, on average, three seeds. As the number of wild bees increased, so did the number of seeds produced, up to 15 seeds per visit. To keep their data clean, each flower was bagged before it bloomed, allowed one visit, and then re-bagged until the seeds were produced (Two Bees). The drastic difference shows that native bees are a vital part of the pollination process.

Native bees are shown to be the most important crop pollinators in a recent study of watermelon crops. This study showed that native bees alone are sufficient to pollinate the watermelon. The leer interested 46 species of wild bees, and showed that native bees, given proper habitat, could replace the honey bee if needed. Natural habitat must be provided, open soil for soil-dwelling species, and year round food supply must be available within 0.3 kilometers, although further distances may suffice (Winfree).

Native bees are a possible, and currently the best, solution to the jam of CCD. To encourage native bees to live around your home, farm, or orchard, plant native plants. Native plants will thrive without much care and native bees are already well suited to them. Use diversity in color, shape, and flowering times to attract many species to perform permanent homes. Not all bees like the same colors or the same shape flowers, so be sure to procure a variety. Avoid pesticides, or read the Devillers study to determine what would be safest to use, and when. Certain pesticides can only be used safely on different parts of plants; however there are a few pesticides which have been shown to be completely safe for the studied bees. Nesting sites are a must, so leave so start ground undisturbed, and consider making nesting boxes (NRDC). All these things combined can help a farm or orchard save money by not renting out honeybees, and as CCD becomes more of an issue, these prices may rise.

Although native bees seem to be a solution to the CCD jam, other issues arise. Most wild bees are solitary, making transportation to large crops like the California almonds nearly impossible. If you of honeybees stopped in the United States, the millions of dollars received from honey and beeswax would no longer exist. These products would need to be imported, and prices would rise drastically. As CCD affects the world, these products may someday be completely eliminated if we do not get a handle on CCD. Also, the different native bees have other diseases they are susceptible to, and portion many of the same diseases with honeybees.

Colony Collapse Disorder is a serious scrape effecting beekeepers, farmers, and consumers. If we cannot get a handle on what is causing this, the world may fall into a greater depression, and food prices will coast. To combat this, we need to stop abusing our honey bees and encourage native bees to take residence near farms and orchards. Pesticide use needs to be cut down, used in safer ways, or altogether eliminated. Mass transportation of hives over hundreds of miles needs to be stopped, as this likely causes tall stress to the honeybees, making them more susceptible to disease.

Choosing the right auto insurance for your family can be confusing. How do you find the best auto insurance for your family’s unique situation? Which companies should you look at? What if you have a teen driver? How much coverage should you carry? Set time and money by following these simple tips and get the best auto insurance for your family.

Comparison Shopping for Auto Insurance
The first step in choosing the best auto insurance for your family is to comparison shop. Before contacting any insurance companies, make a list of what your family needs in an auto insurance policy. Do you have multiple cars to insure? Do you need to insure a teen driver? If you transport your children’s friends, you might want to deem increasing the liability portion of your car insurance.
